iTunes 7

Apple Showtime Announcements: iTunes 7 (and other stuff)

Alongside scads of gadget related announcements, the newest version of iTunes 7 is being demo’ed at Apple’s Showtime event as I type, and while it’s not yet available for download (will be later today) (update: it’s available!), it sounds like there are some scrumptious upgrades, like:

  • View your media library by video, music and (new!) games (that can be played on the new 5G iPods)
  • Browse your music library by cover (much like the just-upgraded CoverFlow)
  • Automatic album cover downloads from the iTunes Store
  • Video encoding upped from 320×240 to 640×480, 4 times the resolution for iPod video screens that are 60% brighter
  • One More Thing: over 75 movies available for download from 4 Disney studios at nearly-DVD quality, downloads that take about 30 minutes over broadband (but that you can watch within the first minute of downloading.)

Update: Just installed iTunes 7. Oooh, the music note is blue! And you need the new QuickTime. And it’s quite the slick-ness. More screenshots when I play with it a bit more. “Determining Gapless Playback Information…”
